It can take years to gain a shot at the biggest audition of your singing career, so when the day arrives it can be very daunting. Ideally you should start preparing specifically for your audition a good few weeks in advance. Know what songs you are going to sing (learn at least 2 or 3) and perfect the song which is going to be your number one choice. The more time you spend practicing it then the more confident you will feel on the day.
Don’t strain your voice too much. Voice strain commonly causes problems in auditions when singers have practiced too heavily as their audition nears. Avoid singing with a sore throat and allocate days and times which you can dedicate to practicing, with good breaks in between to rest your voice.
When you walk into your audition be confident but not cocky. Look the judges in the eyes and smile. Greet them politely and ensure you don’t rush when you talk due to nerves. Do voice warm ups before you enter the room so that you are ready to sing straight away.
Even if the audition goes badly or you don’t perform your best walk out with your head held high and thank the judges. Don’t let them see you defeated; your audition may not have gone perfectly but they could still identify your potential. Even if you don’t get put through remember it is a learning experience and action any feedback you receive to make sure your next audition goes better. If you are left with a sore throat after singing then rest your voice and take some medication such as singers’ throat pastilles to soothe your throat. Avoid singing and talking for a few days so your throat can get better!
