Celebrity Activism in US Politics

The word celebrity we often associate with the renowned people from the world of art and culture. It is now being observed that celebrities and especially those from Hollywood are commenting more and more on the political affairs of USA. Also many of the cine stars have an open and active political inclination.

This might seem odd to feel the overwhelming presence of Hollywood actors in politics but the trend is not new. From the earliest times politics has a closely interknitted bond with the cine stars. In many cases we have seen Hollywood stars commenting on the political situation of the country though their cinematic works. From Charlie Chaplin to Michael Moore many celebrity personalities have made political comments through their works.

Not only this, the politics of USA had also affected the entertainment industry mostly during the post world war period – the peak period of Cold War. The most infamous effect of politics on celebrities can be traced in the 50s when the Communist witch-hunt initiated by US Senator Joseph McCarthy led to the entertainment industry blacklist most commonly known as Hollywood Blacklist. This notorious list led to the unemployment of many entertainment professionals of Hollywood and Broadway just because of their alleged sympathy with the American Communist Party. Most of these allegations were biased and found to be untrue, but the basic thing is that the existence of celebrities in politics is not a new age thing.

Though it is not quite common in US politics that a Hollywood star would become a noted political in US senate or a state Governor. However one major exception to be cited is that of Arnold Schwarzenegger who now hold the office of the Governor of California. Another important politician who though cannot be called a Hollywood celebrity yet definitely a Hollywood actor was President Ronald Regan.
However there has been a remarkable change in the presence of celebrities in politics and many common people do not have a good feeling about this. Also the political parties now bank upon the Hollywood celebrities with a hope of luring their fan base to strengthen their vote banks. Some people accuse this policy of the political parties as taking undue advantage and as destructive politics.

What this new trend of celebrities’ association with politics remains to be seen but this has definitely has brought about a new colour in the political scenario of USA.

Men & Their Gadgets

What is it with men and their gadgets? My bloke just got a DVD recorder and just keeps recording things. I thought the novelty would wear off after a week but it is apparently taking much longer. He’s been transferring all his old videos onto DVD. I was like, who on earth keeps old videos when they don’t even have a VCR? Apparently he does, but it’s broken.

The only good thing about this obsession is that he tapes stuff off cable for me and puts it on a DVD so I can watch it, which is bordering on adorable, I think. Not to gush, but it is quite cute, so the DVD recorder does benefit me as well as him.

I love my clothes, I like looking stylish and I wouldn’t say I as a dedicated follower of fashion but I do like to keep up-to-date with some of the latest fashions. I have been shopping online now for some time and always buy my designer clothes online because of the choice that is now available – its amazing – I mean take the average high street in the average town (alright I live on London) and you have some choice but not much and that gives rise to people buying the same clothes and going to parties and getting embarrassed as someone else has the same clothes on they have. Online you have the world as your shopping mall and I love it – I found a great site the other day – now I think about it – it’s called Question Air – I think I have seen them on my travels (their shops) but their online shop is really cool – loads of different designers all at great prices – anyway go to go now but enjoy I hope you enjoy your internet shopping as much as me.

Petit Stilettos are the shoe of choice for the fashion conscious woman

After years of tottering around on stilettos and skyscraper heels women can now give their feet a break and still look stylish. Women can pass on the sore feet and bad backs with their new shoe best friend – the kitten heel or Petit Stiletto as their being dubbed.

According to Vogue’s Sarah Harris the low heal is the latest shoe trend to embrace. She claims that Chloe, Stella McCartney, Marni and Missoni are all pioneering the new heel height and it is a far cry from the kitten heel which was popular ladies shoe styles in the early 1990s. The designers have opted for strappy styles to keep the shoes from looking like a flashback to the kitten heels of 1991 and to update the style and keep it looking fresh.

In fact Ms Harris believes that we “can expect to be impressed” by the new trend. Almost every shop, as well as online shops such as ModainPelle.com, has taken this trend on. And the desire for these shoes is almost hysterical amongst the fashionistas out there.

The designers have gone all out to create wearable and stylish low heel ladies shoes. Chole’s offering takes their shape from a pirate boot and has a wide saddle leather buckled straps which Ms Harris describes as “the new gladiator, ideal to toughen spring’s procession of pretty dresses”. Anyone wanting an evening look should opt for Marni’s bronze and black suede sandals while and Missoni’s boast a wooden sole and Ms Harris advises us to “jump on the bandwagon; wooden soles are everywhere this season”. And for the comfiest option women should opt for the Geisha-inspired low wedges at Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein.

But is it a trend that is set to catch on well Sarah Harris reckons that “once tried, you’ll never want to wear heels again… unless of course, you’re already hankering after Louis Vuitton’s tri-colour crocodile towering court shoes from autumn/winter 2010…”

Meanwhile, the Times is reporting that the flared trouser is making a comeback which they recommend teaming with a kitten heel or the petit stiletto, which is what French Vogue has rechristened the kitten heel. Lisa Armstrong writing in the paper reckons that the low heel looks “good” with the flare-ette as she is dubbing the new flared trousers.

Want to know all about dressing boho chic? Boho, an acronym for bohemian, epitomizes the free spirit of the hippies or gypsies. Boho fashion trends are varied; you can opt for a bohemian rugged look or the ultra feminine chic look. Whatever boho styles you choose you need the right attitude to carry it with élan.

The variety in boho dresses is symbolic of the different fashion trends. Be it a long peasant skirt teamed with an embroidered tunic or a full-sleeved caftan top paired with leggings, boho fashion is certainly distinct. The different styles that are part of the boho ensemble are as follows:

Maxi dresses: These dresses are usually ankle length but you can also buy a knee-length one. The variations are lace ups, halter necks, strapped ones, and so on. Long full sleeves are common in maxi dresses, however short sleeved dresses are also in vogue.

Tunic dresses: This variety of the boho style dress is perfect for the elegant bohemian look. These can be worn alone or paired with either leggings or skirts. If it’s a simple tunic you can pair it with a layered skirt. Distressed denim shorts or bell-bottoms are also perfect to wear with tunic style dresses.

Tiered or layered dresses: The tiered dresses are an all-time favourite among all boho dresses. Short dresses with numerous layers are more popular.

There are certain details that are common to all kinds of boho dresses. Boho fashion focuses on the use of earthly tones combined with bright vibrant colours. The bold prints and patterns of these dresses also symbolize the free thinking. Floral and abstract prints are the most popular choices.

Intricate embroidery is another favourite of boho fashion enthusiasts. The dresses are often decorated with chunky buttons or embellishments. A boho dress needs to be complemented by the right accessories to create the perfect look. You need to choose boho jewellery, bags, belts, sunglasses and shoes that match your dress.

Celebrity Big Brother Axe to Grind Down More Reality TV?

March 2nd, 2010 Posted 12:39 pm

Celebrity Big Brother is over but at least the last series ended on a high (C4 execs to breathe a sigh of relief!). To our surprise, the final series of CBB has been a brilliant success thanks to its powerhouse of contestants. Among them was Vinnie Jones, Ivana Trump, Stephanie Beecham and Stephen Baldwin and unlike other years, racism and arguments have been non-existent (Channel 4 chiefs to breathe another sigh of relief!).

Despite the success of this year’s show, some critics will be clamouring to get their claws out and cheering that the verbatim of the formula is now dead and buried forever. For publicity agents, the end of Celebrity Big Brother means one less opportunity for their TV hungry clients. As any PR consultant knows, a celebrity client who’s regularly on the box is of great value and opens up a wonderful can of high paying fee opportunities. I wonder how many more celebrity programmes will be swallowed up by cost-cuts and public fall-out with reality TV?

It’s not cheap to make a show like Celebrity Big Brother and with belts tightening, who else could be next for the chop? If we’re to believe what’s been written in the press recently, GMTV is on the verge of a major re-haul. Kate Garraway, Penny Smith and even Andrew Castle must be feeling the noose growing tighter round their necks as speculation mounts. Although GMTV is still clearly popular with viewers, advertising revenue has fallen and budgets are being cut.

Celebrity PR needs reality TV shows to keep their clients topical and earning fees, especially if like Alex Reid, their talents are limited. As digital PR increases, PR agencies are being forced to move with the times and digital TV will soon be the platform that agencies are budding to gain exposure for their clients from.

‘Pitt’-ing Angelina

‘Splits’ may be the word that’s buzzing down Hollywood streets, but don’t get us wrong here-it’s the rumors that Hollywood’s hottest couple Brangelina have planned to part ways. Close associates of the duo, however, negate the assumptions saying that they are very much together and there are no misunderstandings between them regarding Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston. On the contrary, popular celebrity magazines confirm that both are living separately and are fighting a dirty battle for the custody of their six kids. In fact, the magazine is also found quoting that Pitt has approached Jennifer for advice and support. Any guesses what’s in store for us this valentine?
